New Bill to Address Agricultural Damage Caused by Elk

Representatives Tranel and VanderMeer introduced bill AB-1021 along with Senator Testin as a co-sponsor.

The reintroduction of elk in Jackson County is causing significant crop and property damage to Wisconsin farms. The current statute framework does not offer adequate solutions to address the reoccurring damage on agricultural property.

This legislation will:

  • Require DNR to include those impacted directly by elk to be on the elk advisory committee
  • Require DNR to remove elk causing damage on private property within 48 hours
  • Provide an exemption from the public hunting requirement for those who seek wildlife damage abatement assistance or claim payments caused by elk

 This legislation will not:

  • Establish a program that would provide funding for nuisance
  • Increase damage claim limit
  • Include shooting permits when elk have caused nuisance
